Organizational Alignment Using Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecard

“What gets measured gets done” – this is something we all know and believe to be true. However, measurements are often made because measures are easily available or because “measurement is anyway a good thing”.

In 1996, Kaplan and Norton proposed the framework of Balanced Scorecard, to link an organization’s measurements to its strategic goals. BSC also ensures balance between lead and lag measures; and measures from multiple perspectives (financial, customer, internal-process and knowledge-human capital).

While BSC was successfully deployed in many corporations, Kaplan and Norton found that organizations where the strategy was clearly understood, articulated and communicated had a higher success. In 2004 they developed a new visual tool called Strategy Maps to precede and support the Balanced Scorecard.

The proposed talk introduces Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecard to the audience with examples from IT organizations, based on the presenter’s experience.  It also provides a method by which organizations can prioritize various initiatives (like CMMI, People CMM, etc.) in the context of their impact to their strategic goals.
